Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) Information

In anticipation of FMLA leave, begin your planning (after advising your Department Chair) by meeting with Penn Engineering Human Resources to determine your benefits and complete the necessary paperwork.  Also, please advise the Director of Faculty Affairs of your plans.

Maternity Leave

A faculty member who gives birth normally is entitled to eight weeks’ paid time off, or longer if her physician certifies a longer period.  For a cesarean birth, ten weeks of paid time off is allowed.  During this period of incapacity, you are entitled to a 50% reduction in teaching duties during a given academic year.  See the following policies for additional information:

You may also be eligible for an Extension to the Tenure Probationary Period.  This extension also applies to male faculty members who will be the primary or co-equal caregiver.
